Nearly as valuable as the constructed facility is the information used for its development. When accurate, complete and timely, it can optimize design decisions, increase constructed value and support effective management of the facility.
As obvious as this notion seems its realization is not normal practice.
The capital facility industry is fragmented. Facility planners, designers, constructors and managers and each of their dozens of sub-sets have traditionally worked independently. So:
- Project information is created and recreated, without the benefit of other team members’ knowledge, most times inconsistently, and in incompatible formats.
- Information “packages” are handed-off to the next team member in a linear fashion with little understanding as to how it will be used.
However a growing body of new technology knowledge is being implemented by major facility owners across the country. New tools and ways to use them are supporting the capture of information at its source; digitally formatting it for reuse across multiple software platforms; and storing it in searchable database(s) for use by all team members at any time throughout the facility’s lifecycle.
MISSION
facilitates the creation, digital formatting, collection, validation, exchange, use and reuse of facility information so to optimize design decisions, lower construction costs and raise facility management effectiveness.
KEVIN J. CONNOLLY, AIA
Connolly has over 30 years of hands-on experience managing nearly a thousand projects ranging in size from $25,000 to $25,000,000. Over this time he has leveraged new technologies and processes that support effective development of design and construction information. However he has also seen project development processes used that were not as effective as they could be. Outdated information technology and methods have caused project teams, budgets, schedules and facilities to suffer. With today’s technologies Connolly believes there is much room for improvement.
Connolly has been a leader in facility technology knowledge for over ten years:
- 2000 founded Triglyph Architectural Organization
- 2001-2004 spoke on integrated practice and project delivery at The American Institute of Architects (AIA) conferences nationwide.
- 2006 organized and delivered a successful Integrated Project Delivery Workshop with AIA Wisconsin
- 2007 assisted in writing and review of Big Bim, Little Bim
- 2008 co-authored On-Compensation: Considerations for Teams in a Changing Industry
- 2008-2009 taught BIM, project delivery and other facility technology knowledge topics at The University of Wisconsin and at AIA conferences nationwide
- 2009 authored The American Institute of Architects Public Policy Position on Software Interoperability
- 2009 wrote State of Wisconsin BIM Guidelines and Standards (first state in the country to do so)
- 2010 review and update of AIA’s IPD Guide and Multi-Party Contracts
- 2011 currently developing the State of Wisconsin’s Facility Information Handover Guide (another first)
Connolly is a member of:
- The American Institute of Architects (AIA)
- AIA Technology in Architectural Practice committee
- AIA Center for Integrated Practice
- building SMART alliance, a council of the National Institute of Building Sciences
THE TEAM – THE KNOWLEDGE – THE STRATEGY
has long standing relationships with leading consultants in facility management, project delivery, digital data creation and validation, and more. We have also established relationships with software organizations to support modifications in your current systems or propose complete new ways of information creation and exchange.
continuously builds its knowledge base, separating the trends from the fads to find mainstream technology knowledge you can take advantage of now. In this ever-evolving industry we won’t know it all, but we know where to find it.
Your capital facility program is unique and so are your information objectives. focuses first on mutual learning, then collaborative planning and then a team approach to implementation. We will assemble needed consultants and software partners or be happy to work with yours. |
